I have never met a graphic designer who has even heard of PANOSE (or at least never mentioned it). Nor has anyone ever complained to me about not having PANOSE values in my fonts.6 -

I always use the box-with-an-x-inside design. It sees to be the most common design, so I assume that it is what people expect to see when proofing.3 -

In general, no. Giving PUA code points to alternate glyphs is bad practice because when the alternate is used it changes the text, which means the text has to be re-typed to use it with other fonts.…2
